Meet the flockers: Sam Ross
4 September 2020
If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?
Life for me is all about slowly building expertise: in areas of law, business sectors, and most importantly in learning how to work with people. Ok, If I had to choose, it would be behavioural psychology (why do people think what they think and do what they do?) or being able to play any guitar solo on demand.
What is your favourite game or sport to watch and play?
Playing wise, I’m into tennis, squash, frisbee and softball (learnt it while working on summer camps in upstate New York and continued in the London Softball League for a number of years).
Watching wise, anything my kids are watching. I have three boys and the eldest two gobble up as many sports as they can – with scary levels of knowledge. Recently they found a Youtube channel that shows marble runs with live commentary with the marbles representing different countries. Amazing stuff!
What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done?
Joining a boyband when in the sixth form and telling my headmaster that I’d need some time out of school to focus on the band. He wasn’t impressed…
I’d responded to an ad in The Stage magazine and got through a singing and (miraculously) dance audition. Unfortunately the management company ran into some “financial difficulties” and we were told that the project was off.
Undeterred, we organised a band meeting in a central London pub and we vowed to go it alone.
We never saw each other again; cue some back tracking with my teachers. We were going to be called Urban Nature….it’s probably for the best.

What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done, and why did you do it? I’ll be honest and say…
What was your favourite subject in school? Why? It was a mix of PE and Art…
