Meet the flockers: Henry Beattie
10 January 2020
In the next instalment of our meet the flockers series we catch-up with new recruit Henry Beattie who discusses how he became a lawyer, where to eat in Bristol and more.
What led you to pursue a career in law?
Whilst I’ve been interested in a legal career since an early age – I took a slightly longer way round and only converted to law after doing a history degree. I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of getting my head around the solution to a problem and this combined with the sheer variety of work a general commercial lawyer can encounter and the ever changing legal landscape led me to and keeps me interested in a career in law.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
As part of an earlier career in retail I was Father Christmas for a well-known Bristol department store!
Where’s your favourite place to eat in Bristol?
Spending time making my way round Bristol’s restaurants is how I spend (perhaps admittedly a little too much of!) my time at weekends and I love discovering new places to eat in the city. Bristol has an amazing reputation as a foodie destination and you can’t go far wrong with the offering down at Wapping Wharf – everything from fine dining at Box E, to the best veggie restaurant in Bristol at Root and just a little further afield to the best tapas restaurant I’ve been to outside of Spain at Paco Tapas! Woky Ko is next on the list!
What advice would you give your teenage self?
Try not to worry about where you’re going to end up and don’t worry about being yourself! I think as a teenager you’re keen to ‘fit in’ and I was worried that I was a little too geeky, but in my current life working with a variety of different (and often tech focussed) companies – being a bit geeky is definitely an advantage!
